Performing Arts

Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of performing arts at our school, where creativity knows no bounds. Our dynamic performing arts department offers a rich array of opportunities for learners to explore their talents and express themselves through music, dance, and drama.

During school hours, each child enjoys a dedicated one-hour music lesson, igniting their passion for music through engaging activities. From singing and playing various instruments to exploring the rhythmic delights of percussion, including ukuleles, drums, and recorders, students embark on a journey of musical discovery. They also delve into the world of movement and expression, honing their skills in dance and performance.

Beyond the classroom, our Senior Primary learners have the opportunity to participate in an exciting array of extracurricular activities. Whether it’s joining the recorder club, exploring the nuances of speech and drama, strumming away in the guitar or ukulele club, or unleashing their rhythm in the percussion ensemble using our beautiful wooden xylophones, there’s something for every aspiring artist. Additionally, our dance group welcomes students from grades 3 to 7, providing a platform for them to showcase their talent and passion for movement.

Join us on this captivating journey through the performing arts, where every note, step, and expression tells a story of creativity, passion, and artistic excellence.

Public Speaking & Debating

Public Speaking

Public Speaking is offered twice a week in Term 1 and Term 4. It involves speaking in front of a small audience with the goal of informing, entertaining or persuading the listener. Grade 6 and Grade 7 learners are invited to participate.

There are 2 sections to public speaking, namely prepared and unprepared speaking. Good public speaking skills benefit learners in all aspects of life, including personal development and social interactions. There is no public speaking league but some of our learners have entered the SALA and the Platform 5 Competition in Term 3. An inter-house public speaking competition is held in Term 4 and this has proved to be most enjoyable.

Debating

Debating is offered twice a week in Term 2 and Term 3. Penzance participates in the Inter-School Debating League. Debating is an excellent way to encourage critical thinking and effective communication among students. It provides a platform for young minds to engage respectfully and constructively. Only selected learners from grade 6 and 7 are invited to be part of the Debating teams to represent the school at competitions.

Coding clubs provide opportunities for learners to collaborate on projects, share ideas, and work together to achieve common goals. This collaborative environment promotes teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills, which are essential in both academic and professional settings. Coding empowers students to express their creativity by designing and building their own digital creations, such as websites, apps, games, and robotics projects. It encourages innovation and allows students to explore their interests in technology and digital media. Here the learners use Lego, Coding Blocks and iPads.

Dance

What better way is there to end off a busy week, than dance? On a Friday afternoon, the dance teachers are met with masses who love to move and groove. Dance is offered to the grade 3 to 7 learners and takes place between 1 and 2pm, in the hall and JP music room. This is a fun way to exercise whilst learning new routines.
From 2-3pm, Mrs Africa coaches a selected group of dancers, who have been named “The Vibe Tribe”. During this hour, dance is taken seriously, where discipline, technique, musicality, precision and performance are the main focus. “The Vibe Tribe” offers learners a sneak peek into the professional world of dance and equips learners with the necessary skills needed, if they would like to pursue dance as a career.
